Due to consolidation and mergers, the paper industry is currently
facing an excess of capacity that promotes careful selection
of machines that are capable of competing into the future. Due
to environmental constraints and high capital costs, the building
of a new paper machine is rarely economically feasible and older,
less efficient machines are frequently retired. This guides
the paper manufacturer to favor optimizing operation of newer
and more efficient assets through speed-up past original design
speeds. This is not easily accomplished; special engineering
studies concerning headbox capacity, press section capabilities,
drying and calendering potential must be conducted. Additionally,
the paper machines' mechanical and structural reliability must
be determined.
Pretech Inc. offers a complete engineering
evaluation of the paper machines mechanical reliability. The
present structural support system global response is determined,
dryer can balance condition is evaluated, gearing systems stress
limits are considered and, in general, the complete paper machine
dryer section is audited for runability at the new desired operating
range. If any possible impediments to the speed-up are found;
i.e. structural resonance, dryer can unbalance, frame instability;
Pretech Inc. will design and evaluate all possible mitigation
solutions to enable speed-up of the dryer sections, presses,
calendars, and all auxiliary rotating elements.
